Safe meetups

Practical advice for handing over money and goods in person, including safe exchange zones and what to check before you pay.

Yard Snail connects people; the handover is between you and the other person. A few habits make it much safer.

Before you go

  • Message in the app first so there's a record of what was agreed.
  • Tell someone where you're going and roughly when you'll be back.
  • Agree the price before you set off, so nobody is negotiating on a doorstep.

Where to meet

Pick somewhere public, well lit and busy — a store parking lot, a library, a coffee shop. Many police stations and city buildings have a designated safe exchange zone that is under camera, and they are there exactly for this.

At the handover

  1. 1Inspect the item properly — test it, plug it in, open it up. Don't let anyone hurry you.
  2. 2Confirm the price you agreed, out loud, before any money changes hands.
  3. 3Pay in a way you're comfortable with. Cash at pickup is the simplest; many sellers also take payment apps.
  4. 4If you asked for a hold, show your pickup code so the seller knows it's you.

Trust your instincts

If something feels wrong — the item isn't what was described, the price has changed, someone is pushing you to decide fast — it is completely fine to walk away. You have lost nothing but the trip.

Never hand over a deposit for something you have not seen. A request to "hold it with a small payment first" is the single most common marketplace scam.

Yard Snail does not process payments, hold deposits, or offer refunds or buyer protection. Sellers can also flag a listing as prices firm if they don't want to negotiate — respect that and don't lowball.
